Goodwill Message of Ambassador Zhou Pingjian of China at the Commemoration of 2018 Africa Industrialization Day

4 December 2018, Abuja

Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah,

Honourable Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar,

UNIDO Representative and Regional Director Jean Bakole,

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure and honor to join you in the 2018 AID commemoration here in Abuja.

As is well known, industrialization serves as a powerful engine for sustainable development and poverty eradication. To accelerate industrialization and speed up economic transformation remains a common aspiration of African countries. The Africa Industrialization Day (AID), 20 November, commemorated every year, represents a unique platform to enhance international cooperation and dialogue on the pan-African industrialization agenda. We appreciate UNIDO's firm commitment to and hard work for this innovation drive since the AID was first celebrated in 1989.

Both industrial promotion initiative and health care initiative are part and parcel of the Eight Major Initiatives of the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). No wonder, I am keen on the theme of AID 2018, "Promoting Regional Value Chains in Africa: A pathway for accelerating Africa's structural transformation, industrialization and pharmaceutical production". It is indeed of great significance and highly relevant.

China will continue to be a reliable partner of Africa in its pursuit of industrialization. We are working closely with Africa in implementing the outcomes of FOCAC Beijing Summit in a timely and comprehensive manner. We encourage financial institutions to scale up support for China-Africa industrial capacity cooperation. We have decided to open a China-Africa economic and trade expo in China. We will step up support in the development of industries as well as special economic zones and industrial parks in Africa and carrying out technology transfer. We stand ready to share China's experience on industrialization with Africa.

Moreover, China is a big market of over 1.3 billion people. It is our sincere commitment to open the Chinese market. In the coming 15 years, China's import of goods is expected to exceed US$30 trillion. We are glad to see Made-in-China products enjoy wide popularity in Africa. We would be delighted to see more Made-in-Africa-for-China products becoming popular in China as well.

China-Nigeria relations have now reached a stage of growth unmatched in history. The production capacity and investment cooperation tops the priority of China-Nigeria cooperation. We are of full confidence that the "Made-in-Nigeria with China" initiative will grow bigger and stronger to the benefit of both sides.

I wish the 2018 AID commemoration a full success.
